Pupils from Vergennes Elementary didn't just learn about history, they were able to live it as they visited the Purdy one-room schoolhouse at John A. Logan College. The children spent the day hearing stories from teacher Betty Neely of Herrin, a former one-room schoolteacher. Dressed in period clothing, the pupils also sang songs of old and learned lessons in reading, writing, and arithmetic. Here, Grace Bastien, a third-grader, sings a song written about schools of old. Grace Vancil, a second-grader, can't quite get used to wearing a bonnet in the classroom. Neely instructs the classroom. This was a daylong event.
