The Fundamental Core Values of John A. Logan College and Their Definitions

John A. Logan College is committed to the Leadership and Core Values Initiative introduced to the community colleges of Illinois in 1997. The primary purpose of the initiative has been to work with community colleges in exploring questions about values, ethical practices, and the leadership traits that support these considerations in the workplace. The first Illinois Leadership Institute was held in 1998 and is an ongoing event. The National Community College Institute on Leadership and Core Values was conducted in Chicago in 2002.

The selection of the core values as they relate to John A. Logan College was a process that evolved over a period of years beginning in 1997. The core values and definitions were approved by the John A. Logan College Board of Trustees and have been implemented campuswide in a variety of ways, most visibly through core values displays. College personnel representing the five core values are shown illustrating the value in question, e.g., nursing personnel are shown with a student “patient” to illustrate the core value of “compassion.” Core Values were approved by the Board of Trustees on October 24, 2000, as part of Board Policy 3110.

Responsibility

– Using responsibly, preserving, and enhancing human and material resources.

Compassion

– Responding to the feelings and needs of each person with kindness, concern, and empathy.

Fairness

– Communicating and working with others for the benefit of all.

Respect

– Recognizing and valuing the dignity and uniqueness of every person.

General Educational Goals

The faculty and staff of John A. Logan College are committed to providing students with opportunities to develop learning abilities that will last a lifetime. Graduates will be prepared to succeed in their personal and professional lives because of achieved competence in the following general educational goals:

1. To think critically when solving problems, making decisions, and applying scientific inquiry methods.
2. To participate in the entire communication process of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
3. To develop mathematical reasoning and an ability to apply quantitative methods.
4. To achieve physical and mental wellness by learning responsibility, interpersonal skills, and a sense of personal worth.
5. To develop an ethical awareness that focuses on the values of integrity, honesty, and personal responsibility.
6. To become a responsible member of local, national, and global communities by recognizing the values of diverse histories, economies, and cultures.
7. To respond aesthetically to life by engaging in creative and artistic experiences.
8. To accomplish workplace readiness by acquiring competencies and technological application skills related to chosen careers.
